On weekenders that never wait for the weekend
Most of the bags I have owned spent their lives waiting. In a cupboard, inside a dust bag, for the trip that would finally justify taking them out. Some of them waited years. A few are still waiting.
When I started LUSTRA, I made one decision for myself before I made any for the brand. I would carry the bag every day. Not only on weekends, not only for photographs. To the office, to meetings, to dinner, to the boat. If it could not handle an ordinary Tuesday, it had no business calling itself a travel bag.
A bag saved for special occasions is a bag that owns you
There is a quiet logic in saving things. The good glasses for guests, the good coat for the right evening, the good bag for the right trip. It feels like respect. Most of the time it is caution: of scratches, of rain, of wearing something out.
But an object you are afraid to use asks something of you. It sits on a shelf and waits to be protected. LUSTRA was founded on a simple idea, sein statt besitzen, being over owning. A bag that lives in a drawer is owned. A bag that comes with you is lived with.
What daily use asks of a bag
Carrying the same bag every day is the most honest test there is. It shows you within a week what a showroom never will.
It has to be light. A bag you pick up ten times a day cannot be heavy before anything is in it. The Libertine weighs around 800 grams, less than many laptop bags. That number shaped the design more than any sketch.
It has to be ordered. A laptop, keys, a phone, a book, a jumper. Four compartments set into one wall and a padded sleeve mean everything has a place, so the same bag works as a work bag on Monday and a weekender on Friday without repacking your life.
It has to be unbothered. Rain on the walk home, a café floor, the back seat of a taxi. Waxed canvas and full-grain leather were made for exactly this. They are materials from a time when bags were expected to work.
Wear is the point
After a year of daily use, no two of our bags look the same. Waxed canvas softens and takes on the creases of the way you carry it. Unlacquered brass darkens where your hand meets it. Leather deepens in colour and grows supple at the handles.
None of this can be manufactured. It can only be lived. A bag that has been used every day carries a record of where it has been, and that record is the one thing nobody else can buy.
On the days I carry less
There are days when a weekender is more than I need. On those days, The Outer goes instead. It is the monogram canvas bag every Palm Trilogy piece ships in, with its own handles and a zip all the way around. Light, flat, and enough for a laptop and a jacket. The weekender stays home for once, and nothing waits in a drawer.
Do not save it
If there is one thing I would tell anyone who buys one of our bags, it is this. Do not keep it for the right occasion. Take it out on the first day. Put it on the floor of a train. Let it get caught in the rain.
The right occasion is the one you are already in.
